Coates Group Becomes 3x Good Design Award Winner in Australia with the C3 Canopy Winning in Excellence in Design and Innovation
Coates Group has been awarded the prestigious Good Design Award for its first sustainability focused product, the C3 canopy. This is Coates third Good Design Award win since 2019. Held in the highest regard for design and innovation, the internationally renowned award was announced on Friday 8 September in Melbourne at the 2023 Australian Good Design Awards event.
The C3 Canopy received a prestigious Good Design Award Winner Accolade in the Product Design category in recognition for outstanding design and innovation.
The sustainable focus of the C3 Canopy ultimately informed the design outcome. C3 uses smart materials like the solar glass roof for shade and shelter while capturing solar energy when the sun’s out and rainwater when it’s wet. The glass roof is supported by the glulam timber which sequests carbon, capturing it and storing it within the timber, instead of producing carbon during manufacture. The modular structure is designed to suit various environments while promoting sustainability and innovation.
Commissioned and designed in-house by Coates Group at its global headquarters in Sydney, Australia, the C3 Canopy is amongst a range of digital merchandising products and traditional signage products designed by Coates for its QSR, Automotive and Retail customers across the world, including Australia, United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Middle East and more.
The Good Design Awards Jury praised the C3 Canopy, commenting,
"The C3 Canopy has a beautiful aesthetic that is wonderfully sympathetic to its surroundings. We love the use of the timber against the glass, which creates a delightful contrasting effect. From its clean energy creation to its rainwater capture, the C3 Canopy has the potential to enhance the urban area where it is installed.”
Gavin Jessup, Coates Group Principal in Industrial Design who led the design of the C3, explained,
"The project presented us with an opportunity to reimagine a product that provides shade and shelter and push it further to creative positive sustainable impact. We challenged our approach by putting sustainability front and center, and in doing so have created a product which is functional, flexible and adaptable to different environments. We are honoured to receive the Good Design Award for the C3 canopy.”
